Flax, also known as linseed or common flax, is a flowering plant that is cultivated in temperate climates such as that of the UK and much of northern Europe. Flax has a plethora of uses and has been utilised for centuries by us humans in everything from clothing to varnish and many other things in between.
When flax is formed into a fibre and woven it is known as linen and, as you will probably be aware, is used extensively in clothing, bedding, lacework and rope, to name but a few uses. Flax fibres can also be used to make high quality paper that is used in bank notes and teabags too. Flax is also known as linseed and when processed in a specific way the oils can be used as a varnish in woodworking and a pigment binder in oil paintings. The use of these fibres in clothing and mummification can be traced to the ancient Egyptians where there are paintings in temples depicting fields of flaxseed plants.
As a food source flaxseed has also been widely and for many centuries with historical records showing it being eaten in ancient Babylonia and Greece and used to relieve problems in the stomach. Nowadays with modern extraction techniques allowing for oils to be extracted efficiently from this superb seed, its use in foods and supplements has increased exponentially.
