How to use dried sprats
Training treat
Training treat
Sprats are a high-value reward for dogs who aren't motivated by standard dry treats. The smell is strong — strong enough to work in most distraction environments — and they're small enough to use in volume without overfeeding. Break into smaller pieces for high-frequency training sessions or puppies. The single-ingredient composition means no hidden variables for dogs on elimination diets or with food sensitivities.
Meal topper
Meal topper
Crumble a few sprats over wet or dry food to restart interest in a dog who's gone off their meals. This happens more often than owners expect — with age, stress, illness, or simply boredom with the same food. The fat content makes the meal genuinely appealing without significantly disrupting the nutritional balance of a complete diet. A small amount goes a long way.
Daily coat and skin supplement
Daily coat and skin supplement
Add 2–3 sprats to the daily meal as an omega supplement for dogs with dull coats, dry skin, or persistent low-level itching. The omega 3 and 6 fatty acids support skin barrier function and coat condition from the inside. Results are typically visible within 3–4 weeks of consistent daily use. This is the most underused application — most owners buy sprats as treats and don't realise they're also one of the most cost-effective coat supplements available.
Enrichment
Enrichment
Use sprats in lick mats, snuffle mats, or Kongs as part of a feeding enrichment routine. Crumbled into a lick mat they provide sustained foraging activity, mental stimulation, and the omega benefit simultaneously. Particularly useful for high-energy dogs, dogs with anxiety, or dogs who eat too quickly and need their meal time extended.
Dried sprats are one of The Pets Larder's own-label products — and one of the ones we're most straightforward about recommending. The ingredient list is one line: 100% sprats. The sourcing is EU-certified, from cold Baltic waters where the fish are naturally small, oily, and rich in the omega fatty acids that make them genuinely useful rather than just a treat.
We stock a lot of fish treats. Sprats earn their place because they do more than one job. They're a high-value training reward, an effective daily coat and skin supplement, a meal topper for dogs who've gone off their food, and a long-term addition to the diet for dogs who need more omega in their daily intake. Most treats do one of those things. These do all four.
Air-drying rather than baking preserves more of the natural oil content — which is where the omega 3 and 6 sit. Baking at high heat degrades those fatty acids. The drying process takes longer and costs more to run, but it's the reason these work as a supplement rather than just a snack.
