Bad Weather Excursions With Your Dog in Cornwall

Now that the autumn is really settling in and the coats and scarfs are well and truly back in full time employment it can sometimes be hard to know what to do with your delightful doggies when they want to get out but the wind is howling and the rain is lashing down. Here at The Pets Larder, our team has been parenting our very own canine companions and taking care of other people's dogs, as we've had our own experience running a doggy day care for many years and that has given us some pretty good ideas about things to do with our furry friends when the bad weather sets in.

Bad Weather Excursions in Cornwall

In Cornwall we are lucky enough to have a brilliant selection of some of the best dog friendly cafes, farms, galleries and historic attractions that the country has to offer and we've decided to pick a few of our favourites so you can plan a terrific trip out with your dog whatever the weather.

Newlyn Art Gallery and Penzance Exchange

If you and your dog like to get a bit of culture into your excursions then look no further than the Newlyn Art Gallery and Penzance Exchange. These two gallery spaces offer an “internationally recognised contemporary art programme”, with magnificent modern artworks spanning a wide variety of media and techniques. The Newlyn Art gallery has existed for more than 125 years and has supported the rich artistic presence the area has, from the late nineteenth century and the artists of the Newlyn school to the modern masterpieces it holds today. In 2007 the Newlyn Art Gallery saw an exciting year as it reopened after being lovingly renovated and they also opened their new venue The Exchange in Penzance. Both of these cultural citadels have cafe spaces serving hot drinks, light lunches and tasty treats and both allow well behaved dogs throughout, except during specific exhibitions or shows. At The Pets Larder we love to get some inspiration and our creative juices flowing and can't think of a better way to spend a wet and windy day in Cornwall.

Heartlands Cornish Heritage

Located just outside Redruth, this 19 acre Cornish Mining World Heritage site is the perfect way to spend a day with all the family, including the dogs. This charitable trust is home to a wealth of gardens and grounds, a mining museum and exhibition space, giant adventure play-park for children, a soft indoor play area for children and the gorgeous Red River cafe. Not only does Heartlands have all this, but they host events throughout the year, such as markets, festivals and fun days, too, so do keep checking their site for the latest piece of entertainment to come through the gates at Heartlands. This magnificent piece of mining history is also a great budget friendly option, as most of its attractions are completely free to visit and utilise, just don't forget to make a donation or get yourself a cup of tea if you can, in order to support the charity in its future endeavours and keep this wonderful family friendly day out thriving.

Healeys Cyder Farm

If there is one beverage that's synonymous with the south-west of England it has to be cider and there's no better place to go on a bad weather day than a place where cloudy is definitely not a bad thing! Healeys Cyder farm is situated in the breathtaking Cornwall countryside a few miles from the Cornish capital Truro. For the adult part of a day out at Healeys you can do spirit and cider tastings of their gins, famous rattler ciders and the oldest english whiskey, as well as tours around the brewery, distillery, museum cellars, and the orchard. For younger people there is a whole host of friendly animals to meet as well as rides on the vintage tractor and trailer and the jam kitchen for those with a sweet tooth. For those who are designated to drive, the cafe on site serves an amazing cream tea and the shop sells a great selection of the more adult beverages for you to take home and sample at your own leisure. This fabulous farm is a great day out with your dog as the whole site is pooch friendly, but you may have to try and rope someone in to drive you both so you can sample the delights on site safely!
