The National Trust is a heritage and conservation charity that holds the keys to some of the most stunning spots in the South West. From, glorious gardens and extensive estates, to, magical manors and some of the most beautiful beaches Cornwall and the rest of the South West has to offer, National Trust are always one of our go-to’s when searching for our next canine caper in the great outdoors.
However, there’s nothing worse than getting prepared for a delightful day out in the countryside with your dogs, just to have it spoiled by finding out your favoured spot doesn't allow dogs. We understand why this sometimes has to be the case, in order to protect vulnerable species and habitats, but, it doesn’t quite quell the disappointment that can be felt when you've geared up for a day of exploration.
Not all great places can be dog-friendly but it’s always great when they are!
In this post, we will be giving you the lowdown on a few of our favourite dog-friendly National Trust properties in Cornwall so you can be confident of a cordial trip with your canines when you next venture out.
Sitting just outside of Penzance, in the pretty village of Madron, is the stunning gardens at Trengwaiton. Known locally for its award-winning camellias, magnolias and rhododendrons but housing a whole lot more, Trengwaiton is the perfect place to get into the great outdoors and appreciate some jaw-dropping horticulture alongside your four-legged friends. You and your dogs won't find it difficult to lose a day wandering in the walled gardens, enjoying an opulent picnic in the orchard or taking in the stunning views from the terrace at the top of the garden. You will find a plethora of fascinating plants at Trengwaiton, as well as kitchen gardens that produce a whole host of tasty treats. Some of the produce is available to buy too, with all proceeds going towards the maintenance of the garden, a delicious extra treat after your dog walk!
There is also a cute little cafe that welcomes dogs into their garden, perfect for an apres-walk treat on a dry day!

Located just outside of Bodmin in North Cornwall is the luscious Lanhydrock estate. Many people might think that the glorious late Victorian country house and garden were the jewels of the Lanhydrock estate, but, we beg to differ! For us, and our dogs, the best part of this historic estate is the 900 acres of parkland, ancient woodlands and riverside walks that are ideal for a dog walk, whatever the occasion. Lanhydrock boasts an amazing habitat for a whole host of different species of plants and animals and you can really feel a oneness with nature when out exploring and walking with your dogs.
The estate also has an amazing array of pre-mapped walks that are available online at the National Trust’s website (see link below) so you can plan your perfect walk ahead of time and be able to choose your terrain based on your and your dog's abilities.
There are two cafes on site that are great for a refuel, serve a fine selection of delicious treats and, most importantly, are both dog-friendly!

Located just a short drive from The Pets Larder headquarters in Hayle, Cornwall, is the magical Godolphin Estate. A firm favourite amongst the staff here, Godolphin plays host to over 500 acres of top-quality Cornish countryside, alongside Bronze Age archaeology, a history of Cornish mining and wildlife as far as the eye can see, spot-on for dog walks with a different slant every time you visit. Although dogs aren't allowed in the house, except guide dogs, they are allowed to roam the rest of the estate with you through historic gardens, woodlands, riversides and hills, making for a different adventure every time. Why not try conquering Godolphin Hill when you visit, a tranquil walk with a reward of some of the most spectacular views in West Cornwall?
Like many of the National Trust properties in Cornwall, there is a charming tea room on site, which is great for rehydrating you and your four-legged friend after a delightful dog walk around Godolphin.
