Saving You Money
All across the country this coming Tuesday many of us will be prepping our pans, finding our flour and wielding our whisks, in preparation for one of the most delicious days of the year, Pancake Day.
Traditionally Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, was celebrated to mark the beginning of Lent and the 40 days of fasting that Christians the world over observe in order to commemorate the 40 days of fasting in the desert, supposedly undertaken by 1st-century preacher, Jesus.
Today this holiday has become much more non-denominational and is celebrated by people from all faiths and backgrounds. After all, any excuse to make these delightfully delicious treats is an excellent one.
This year, Pancake Day falls on the 1st of March and is shared by a celebration of one of the best toppings for the perfect pancake, Peanut Butter Lovers Day. This celebration of the deliciously nourishing nut butter is more commonly found in the US, but we think this serendipity is too perfect to ignore!
What could be better than a day dedicated to both pancakes and peanut butter!? We think it’s one that we can share with our canine companions. And thankfully, pancake recipes can easily be amended to be dog friendly and here at The Pets Larder, we have the best dog-friendly peanut butter around, meaning your perfect pooches can enjoy this delightful day just as much as we will.
When it comes to giving your dog the perfect pancake day, there are a few things that we need to bear in mind. Most dogs' digestive systems can only handle small amounts of dairy products (however much they might try to convince you otherwise when the cheese is out!) and as such, the classic pancake recipe does need to be amended ever so slightly to allow our furry friends their delicious pre-lent desserts.
Thankfully the brilliant charitable organisation Dogs Trust has got an amazing recipe that substitutes the milk in the pancake batter for water, making the recipe dairy-free and perfectly pooch-friendly. Their recipe uses only three ingredients and takes only a matter of minutes to prepare and cook, so your delightful dogs can easily be involved in this flipping good holiday. Alongside the recipe, the Dogs Trust has made a super easy-to-follow video, so anyone, however culinarily competent they may be, can have a go at this superb pooch-friendly seasonal treat. They have even made their poochy pancakes into cool canine shapes, such as pawprints and bones, to add another layer of love to their perfect pancakes. You can get the recipe, the video and some serving suggestions by clicking the link below.
If you are getting your dogs involved in Pancake Day, don't forget to adjust the amount of food and treats they are having that day in order to avoid overfeeding your precious pooches.
If you haven’t tried peanut butter on your pancakes yet, you are truly missing out! Whether it’s served alongside caramelised bananas or drenched in honey and red berries, peanut butter really should be a Pancake Day staple.
And the best part about this delicious nut butter is that there are varieties available that are delightfully dog-friendly, such as Natural Cornish Pet - Peanut Butter for Dogs.
Our Peanut Butter for Dogs is all-natural, free from xylitol (which is extremely toxic to all dogs and is a common ingredient in human peanut butter brands) and palm oil. Natural Cornish Pet - Peanut Butter for Dogs also has absolutely no added artificial colours, preservatives or flavourings and is made right here in Cornwall with the utmost love and care.
Peanut butter is not just a great option for topping your dog-friendly pancakes, it is great for your dog's health too. Peanut butter is a rich source of protein, heart-healthy fats, vitamins B and E, and Niacin, meanings it's not just delicious but fabulously nutritious too
Once pancake day is over and your dogs have had their fill of peanutty pancakes, this delicious spread is perfect for use in puzzle toys, such as the Classic Kong, and as an alternative to a ‘spoonful of sugar’ to help your canine companions' medicines go down, due to its sticky texture and wonderfully overpowering aroma. In short, your jars of Natural Cornish Pet - Peanut Butter for Dogs won't be lasting very long, after Shrove Tuesday, if your dogs are anything like ours!
So, this Tuesday don't forget your furry friends when you find your frying pans, get the Dogs Trust’s dog-friendly pancake recipe and your Natural Cornish Pet - Peanut Butter for Dogs at the ready and make this pancake day one to remember for all of your furry family.
