Saving You Money
With over 100 different varieties on our shelves at The Pets Larder, it’s no surprise to know that dog chews are one of our best-selling products for the delightful dogs of Britain. From vegetarian chews to dental, antlers, doggy dental chews and everything in between, the selection we stock are all-encompassing and beautifully vibrant in its variety.
The benefits of dog chews are wonderful but they do come with their dangers too, some chews can cause problems if they shatter, are brittle or are too hard and there have even been examples of chews containing harmful ingredients and coatings.
At The Pets Larder we are rigorous in our checks when putting any product on the shelves so you can always be safe in the knowledge that we are providing you with only the best. It is, however, important to give your dogs their chews in a safe environment and one that is supervised.
With such a huge selection of natural chews and dental delights for your dogs to chew on and a knowledge of some of the risks, we thought we’d give you a quick run-down of how to give your dogs their favourite chews in the safest way possible, so you can avoid any unwanted issues.

Picking a chew that is right for your dog is probably the best place to start when safety is in mind. Small treats will not be suitable for larger dogs as they can pose a choking hazard (this is also worth noting when buying dry treats). A larger chew, such as an antler, would not be a good option for smaller dogs as they could pose a risk to their teeth and jaw.
Safe dog chews are often ones made by reputable companies and are produced in such a way that they are not too soft, to prevent breaking up and causing a hazard and not too hard, posing a threat to the teeth and jawbones.
Another way that safe dog chews that are edible can also be a risk, is for dogs that suffer from weight issues, as they can add calories that are often not counted. In these cases, it is important to manage the calories and reduce the food intake accordingly when treats or safe dog chews are given.
So, what do we do to make sure our dogs are safe and secure when we give them some delicious chews to gnaw at? Well, once you’ve chosen an appropriate and good quality chew, the simplest answer and the thing that you can do to keep your dog safe at all times, is to supervise them whenever they are chewing. Supervising your dog when they chew will allow you to keep an eye on your dog's behaviour and the chew itself, making sure your dog is happy and safe and that the chew hasn't shattered, causing choking hazards, or broken, causing potentially sharp edges.
It is also a good idea to inspect your chews before you gift them to your dogs, checking for any damage or wear that could cause problems.
Checking your dog’s teeth and mouth after chewing is also recommended when introducing a new chew to their routine, to make sure there is no sign of damage, all different dog breeds approach chewing in a different way due to their jaw sizes there is not a one size fits all for all breeds.
At The Pets Larder we pride ourselves on the quality of products we stock and have an extremely strict set of rules we adhere to before allowing any product near our shelves. We are also always happy to advise our lovely customers where we can, so, if you’re unsure of what chew would be best for your canine companions then please don’t hesitate to ask.
