The Benefits of Venison for Your Dogs - Venison Stew

The Benefits of Venison for Your Dogs

Here at The Pets Larder, we are always looking for the best new all-natural products for your furry friends. We are also committed to finding as many products as we can that are going to be best for the environment too, increasing our range of vegetarian dog treats and foods and chews that have sustainability at their core.

When it comes to animal protein sources that are truly sustainable, the options are limited at best. However, there are a few amazing choices that can reduce your carbon pawprint as well as be brilliantly beneficial for your dog's health too, and sitting at the top of this list is venerable venison.

Venison is a great eco-friendly option for dogs, as it is superbly sustainable, producing less than a third of the carbon emissions than a beef-based product would. It is also essential for deer populations to be controlled, in order to protect local habitats and crops, meaning there is often an excess of this marvellous meat that needs to be eaten.

Venison also has a whole host of nutritional benefits for your canine companions too, making this versatile protein a win-win for your dog and the environment.

In today's post, we will be exploring the reasons why deer is such a superbly sustainable option, what benefits this mouthwatering meat has for your dogs, as well as highlighting our favourite venison products, so your dogs can reap the wonderful rewards from this brilliant environment-friendly protein source.

Venison, Sustainability and the Environment

Meats such as venison are categorised as game meat and as we alluded to above these meats are responsible for considerably fewer emissions than traditionally farmed meats, like beef and lamb. According to carbon emissions calculators, game meats produce around 6.5 CO2e/kg in comparison to untrimmed beef which produces over 23 CO2e/kg, less than three times the amount!

Deer populations across the world have exploded over the last few hundred years, as natural predators have lost their places in our ecosystems, due to industry and loss of habitat. This leads to a necessity for controlling these populations by gamekeepers and deerstalkers to redress the balance, maintain healthy habitats and protect arable farmland, that produces all of our virtuous vegetables. All of this leads to a certain amount of venison being produced every year, regardless of whether it’s eaten. Waste food, of course, is also a massive contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

With all this being said, finding ways to make sure venison is consumed is not only beneficial but essential to maintaining a healthy environment.

Virtuous Venison

As well as being great for the environment, venison is also packed with a whole host of nutritional benefits for your furry friends.

This marvellous meat is a rich source of B-vitamins, zinc and iron, which helps with energy conversion as well as aiding the maintenance of a healthy immune system and the function of the major organs. Venison is also a lean protein, making it the perfect option for those dogs on diets or taking part in weight loss routines. Lean meats can also reduce the risk of heart disease and other weight-related problems due to their minimal fat and cholesterol levels.

Furthermore, venison is a novel protein, meaning that is not a protein that your dog would normally consume as part of their diets, such as beef and chicken. These novel proteins are great for those dogs that suffer from allergies or food sensitivities, as your dogs will not have been overexposed to them. It can help to reduce the symptoms that are caused by food sensitivities such as skin irritations, rashes and gastrointestinal issues, as well as being terrifically tasty to boot!
