What is an Eco-Friendly Dog Product?

This summer we have, yet again, experienced periods of extreme heat and dry weather, leading to water shortages and other severe environmental ramifications. This is, as we all know, a direct consequence of the impact we humans have had on the environment and, as such, in today's world, we have to make sure we are doing everything in our power to reduce the impact we have on the planet and its eco-systems.

Pet ownership can often be problematic when trying to reduce our impact on the planet, as our furry friends don't have particularly positive carbon pawprints due to the nature of their diets and the products we are sometimes forced to use to care for them.

However, there are things that can be done in order to make sure that we are doing the utmost possible we can to live an eco-conscious existence alongside our passions for pets.

In today's article, we will be exploring what constitutes an eco-friendly dog product, what substitutions we can make to our dog’s routines in order to reduce their impact on the planet, as well as highlighting a couple of our fabulously sustainable dog product options so we can you get started on your eco-conscious pet ownership journey as soon as possible.

What is an Eco-Friendly Dog Product?

In the modern world, many of us are doing everything we can to reduce our carbon emissions by means of recycling, electric car ownership, composting, solar power, plastic avoidance and buying sustainable products. However, we are often quick to forget the potentially large ‘carbon pawprint’ of our canine companions. It is estimated that the average-sized dog, using conventional care methods, generates emissions equivalent to TWICE that of a family SUV! This is mainly due to their meaty diets, lack of sustainable faeces removal methods and unsustainable products such as plastic bedding, toys, clothes, poo bags and other doggy supplies. Thankfully it is becoming easier and easier to make eco-conscious decisions when it comes to our dogs and the products they use.

When it comes to our carbon footprints it is basically impossible to be perfect due to our reliance on fossil fuels, energy consumption and large-scale agriculture. However, we do what we can in our daily lives to ensure we don’t add to the problem when we don’t have to. This is very much the same when it comes to buying for our dogs. For example; when looking for your next batch of treats for your furry friends, why not try one of our Plant-Based or Vegetarian Dog Treats? Alternatively, why not try a compostable poo bag, such as These from Earth Rated, for your dog waste and avoid the 500 years of plastic in our environment any single-use dog poo bag will lead to?

Although these changes might feel inconsequential and a drop in the ocean, they really do help and with lots of small changes to our daily lives, we can all move towards a better future for the planet and all the animals, plants and microorganisms that call it home.
