At The Pets Larder we pride ourselves on providing our customers with the healthiest, most innovative all-natural foods, treats and chews for your pets that we possibly can. We like to source our perfect products from the best suppliers this country has to offer, whilst making a range of our very own too.
But who would have thought that one of the most popular products on the shelves, here at The Pets Larder, would be able to trace its origins to the foothills of the Himalayas? Neither did we!
However, the amazing handcrafted Himalayan yak milk treats and chews from the incredible Yakers are incomparable in their ingenuity and their tongue-tantalising deliciousness.
In today’s post, we will be shining a light on the fantastic Yakers and looking at some of the brilliantly inventive treats and chews they produce using a process that is said to be thousands of years old.
There is a saying that goes “Do not try to do everything, do one thing well”, and Yakers absolutely epitomise this sentiment.
Yakers are specialists in dog chews and treats that are crafted from Himalayan yak milk and are crafted with a centuries-old technique. Now you might think this is quite the niche, but Yakers have made it their own, and we can confirm that dogs go absolutely mad for their tasty treats and chompable chews.
All of the Yakers' chews and treats are based on a recipe that Himalayan yak farmers have been using for generations to produce a hard smoked cheese called chhurpi. Chhurpi is made by taking yak and cow's milk and adding lime and salt in order to start the coagulation process. The whey, or solids, is then left to ferment slightly before undergoing a process of pressing and drying, before being cut into rectangular pieces and smoked over a fire to further harden it as well as imbue it with a delicious smoky flavour. This ‘hard chhurpi’ was consumed by the nomadic yak herders by softening pieces in the mouth and chewing it like gum. One block of chhurpi could last a herder up to two hours!
Yakers was born when it was discovered that this ancient snack was also used to feed the herder's dogs and that it would be a perfect low-fat, vegetarian, all-natural snack for any of our western canine companions too.
All four Yakers products are made using this fascinating process and are also available on our shelves, in-store or online, at The Pets Larder.
Now, cheesy chewing gum may not sound that appetising to you or me, but we know there's a set of teeth in your house that will love a cheesy treat and one that leaves their chewing needs satisfied too. The Yakers Chews are still made in the traditional method and are a great source of calcium, amino acids and protein giving your dog a boost for their joints, muscles, bones and immune system. These chews are also very low in fat as most of the dairy fat content is taken out during the cooking and curing process. Yakers Dog Chews are also vegetarian, free from any preservatives and can help to keep your dog’s teeth and gums healthy with regular chewing. Yakers Chews also come in three superb sizes, allowing for any sized dog to enjoy the pleasure of one of these cheesy Himalayan delights.
After the success of the classic Yakers Dog Chew, it was no wonder that Yakers’ decided to expand their range and find new ways of getting your dogs to taste the majesty of their yak milk products. And we are proud to introduce you to some of the newest products on our shelves, the Yakers Crunchy Snacks.
These delectable snacks are made with the same traditional methods and have all of the goodness of the Yakers Chew. The only real difference is the ‘crunch’, each snack has a balance between hard and soft that makes them ideal as a tantalising treat or a quick snack on the go. These crunchy colossi are available in three shapes; bars, bites or strips so you will be able to find the perfect treat to suit your furry friends. Like their chewy counterparts, these tasty treats are all-natural, preservative-free, vegetarian, teeth and gum friendly, and, most of all, marvellously moreish!!
